Getting Around Sydney
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Sydney is a large city with a well-developed network of public transport. You will need to apply an Opal card for Sydney’s ferries, buses, trains and light rail. Most international students are not eligible to apply for a travel concession card so you must pay full fare when travelling on Sydney’s public transport. You need to load money onto your Opal card either online or at a ticket machine so that you have credit before you travel otherwise you will not be able to board your mode of transport. Alternatively, you can also swipe your credit card a the ticket readers when you are catching public transport and it will automatically deduct the amount of your fare. Don’t forget to swipe both on and off when you are getting on ferri.es, buses, trains and light rail

RIDE SHARE
Ride share companies such as Uber, Ola and Didi are very active in Sydney and it is quite an effective way to get around, with less cost than a taxi. Before travelling, you will need to download the app and set up a profile with credit card. You can then make a booking. You do not need to pay your driver as your fare amount will be automatically deducted from the credit card you have provided in you account.
FERRIES
The city of Sydney is built around a harbour so, depending on where you are travelling to, Sydney Ferries may provide a convenient and enjoyable way to travel.
For fun and cost-effective day out, you may also like to travel by ferry to some of Sydney’s must-see destinations such as to Circular Quay, the Parramatta River, Manly, Double Bay, Mosman, Taronga Zoo, Balmain, Cockatoo Island or Darling Harbour. Ferry services operate daily, until midnight.

RENT A CAR
There are several hire car companies (Avis, Budget, Europcar, Sixt, etc) operating in Sydney so if you are travelling further afield or just want to zip around the city in your own vehicle, the hire car option may be right from you. Starting from approximately $55 per day plus insurance, hiring a car is not cheap but can allow you to reach places you may not otherwise be able to get to.
If you are going to drive in Sydney, you must make sure you have an appropriate license and be familiar with the road rules of this bustling city.
