Working in Australia
Your student visa requires you to abide by some conditions and it is very important to understand what your student visa entitles you to do or not do. You are legally not allowed to work until you have commenced your studies in Australia. Once your course has commenced you are permitted to work a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight when your course is in session, and unlimited hours when your course is out of session. This means that you can work full time when you are on a college holiday break.
For some courses, you will be required to undertake work placement as part of your course. These hours are not included in the 40 hours per fortnight work limitation. Unpaid and voluntary work is normally excluded from this limit as well but you should refer to the Department of Home Affairs website to make sure you never breach the conditions of your visa.
Tax File Number
You must obtain a Tax File Number to be able to work in Australia. This is available at no cost from the Australian Tax Office.
